Famous-Barr’s French Onion Soup
“One of my favorite memories has always been the French onion soup that was served at the Famous & Barr department store. The soup was thick and rich, and came from the kitchen in a McCoy pottery brown drip soup bowl bubbling with melted cheese atop two slices of French baguette. As the stores closed their restaurants, it was fortunate that many years ago the St. Louis Post-Dispatch published the recipe in their Food Section so fanatics of this soup could recreate their obsession at home!”
Have you heard of Famous-Barr? It was a department store in St. Louis that was under the Macy’s umbrella and was eventually closed. And their French Onion Soup was legendary. Since I live in Colorado and had never been to Famous-Barr, I had to see what all the fuss was about when I came across this recipe. And oh my gosh. No wonder it was legendary! This soup is amazing! Rich, with sweet caramelized onions, a toasty slice of bread covered in cheese. Absolutely fabulous.
